#2 Learners’ Dictionary

  1. a kick in the pants (phrasal)
      - something that makes you improve your behavior
      ex. He needs a good kick in the pants.
  2. unpack (verb)
      - to remove things from a suitcase, bag, or box
      ex. I haven’t even had time to unpack my clothes.
  3. gadget (noun)
      - a small device or machine with a particular purpose
      ex. Have you seen this handy little gadget? It’s for separating egg yolks from whites.
  4. morph (verb)
      - to gradually change, or change someone or something, from one thing to another
      ex. The title of the book will likely change as the central idea morphs over time.
  5. rival (noun)
      - a person, group, etc. competing with others for the same thing or in the same area
      ex. The companies produce rival versions of the toy.
  6. cutting-edge (adjective)
      - very modern and with all the newest features
  7. bump (verb)
      - to hit something with force
      ex. She bumped into his tray, knocking the food onto his lap.
  8. compelling (adjective)
      - if a reason, argument, etc. is compelling, it makes you believe it or accept it because it is so strong
      ex. It’s a fairly compelling argument for going.
  9. mainstream (adjective)
      - considered normal, and having or using ideas, beliefs, etc. that are accepted by most people
      ex. This is the director’s first mainstream Hollywood film.
  10. tout (verb)
      - to advertise, talk about, or praise something or someone repeatedly, especially as a way of encouraging people to like, accept, or buy something
      ex. He is being widely touted as the next leader of the party.
  11. embedded (adjective)
      - fixed into the surface of something
      ex. The thorn was embedded in her thumb.
  12. subsidy (noun)
      - money given as part of the cost of something, to help or encourage it to happen
      ex. The government is planning to abolish subsidies to farmers.
  13. phenomenal (adjective)
      - extremely successful or special, especially in a surprising way
      ex.  Her rise to fame was quite phenomenal, in less than two years she was a household name.
  14. iterative (adjective)
      - doing something again and again, usually to improve it.
  15. inflection point (noun)
      - a time of sudden, noticeable, or important change in a industry, company, market
      ex. The invention of the microprocessor was an inflection point.
  16. drum up sth (phrasal)
      - to try to increase business activity or get support of something
      ex. Retailers are trying to drum up sales with price cuts.
  17. penchant (noun)
      - a liking for or a habit of doing something, especially something that other people might not like
      ex. Her penchant for disappearing for days at a time worries her family.
